Biography

Wilfrid Schroeder is an Assistant Research Scientist with ESSIC and a Visiting Scientist at NOAA/NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). He received his undergraduate and Masters degrees from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in Meteorology and Environmental Engineering, respectively. In 2008 he received his PhD in Geography at the University of Maryland College Park. Dr. Schroeder's research is focused on the use of multi-spectral remote sensing techniques for biomass burning monitoring. He has over 10 years of experience working with vegetation fires, land cover and land use change in the Brazilian Amazon. Combining ground, airborne and higher spatial resolution spaceborne data from Landsat-class imagery, Dr. Schroeder lead the validation of the Fire and Thermal Anomalies product derived from the MODIS instruments aboard the NASA EOS Terra and Aqua Satellites. He is currently an  NPP/Suomi science team member working on the validation and development of the VIIRS Active Fire Detection product, and leads the development of the active fire data validation methods for the upcoming GOES-R ABI mission. His research includes the detection and characterization of vegetation fires at regional to global scales, generating improved information for use in fire behavior and biomass burning emissions models.
