SUMMARY:Hydroclimate Modeling Applications in Water Resources Planning: Expectations, Promises and Reality
DESCRIPTION:This event has passed. See the seminar recording here:\n\n\n\nProf. Soroosh Sorooshian\nDirector, Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing (CHRS)\nDistinguished Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering\nUniversity of California, Irvine\nMonday March 8, 2021, 2 PM EST\n \nAbstract:\nAddressing the information needs of water resources management and hydrologic hazards requires the use of predictive models and stochastic methods.  Depending on the problem, the information needed may range from hourly, seasonal to multi-decadal. Regional climate models are used for longer time scales, while information from Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models are often employed for short-term forecasting. Utility of such models for practical applications will depend on the success of testing and validation against historical observations. Therefore, availability of long and accurate observations is critical for this purpose. Availability of in-situ observational data of sufficient spatial and temporal resolutions, especially at the global scale, poses a major challenge.  An alternative to ground-based observations is the use of satellite remote sensing to estimate key hydrometeorological variables such as precipitation.\nThis presentation reviews some of the challenges in prediction capabilities as they pertain to water resources and hydrometeorological requirements.\nBiosketch:\nSoroosh Sorooshian is the Director of the Center for Hydrometeorology & Remote Sensing (CHRS) and Distinguished Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Earth System Science Departments at UC Irvine. He is currently Chair, Rosenberg International Forum on Water Policy, University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources and a member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and fellow of TWAS.\nHis area of expertise is Hydrometeorology, water resources systems, climate studies and application of remote sensing to earth science problems with special focus on the hydrologic cycle and water resources issues of arid and semi-arid zones.\nUCI Faculty Profile: https://www.faculty.uci.edu/profile.cfm?faculty_id=5082 ( https://www.faculty.uci.edu/profile.cfm?faculty_id=5082 )\nWebinar:\nWebinar thread: https://go.umd.edu/sorooshianwebinar ( https://go.umd.edu/sorooshianwebinar )\nEvent site: https://go.umd.edu/sorooshian ( https://go.umd.edu/sorooshian )\nWebinar number: 120 327 2543\nWebinar password: essic\nTo join the audio conference only:\nUS Toll: +1-415-655-0002\nGlobal call-in numbers ( https://umd.webex.com/umd/globalcallin.php?MTID=e492bfe8c2d628cca31b7c1f3b7185bcf )\nFor IT assistance:\nCazzy Medley: cazzy@umd.edu ( mailto:cazzy@umd.edu )\nTravis Swaim: tswaim1@umd.edu ( mailto:tswaim1@umd.edu )\nResources:\nSeminar schedule & archive: https://go.umd.edu/essicseminar ( https://go.umd.edu/essicseminar )\nSeminar Google calendar: https://go.umd.edu/essicseminarcalendar ( https://go.umd.edu/essicseminarcalendar )\nSeminar recordings on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ESSICUMD ( https://www.youtube.com/user/ESSICUMD )\n
