SUMMARY:Building Community Resilience and Enabling Access to Trusted Data Using GeoCollaborate, A Cross-Platform Data Sharing and Collaboration Environment
DESCRIPTION:\nDave Jones, CEO & Ellen Prager, Ph.D., Chief Scientist \nStormCenter Communications, Inc.\nTuesday October 8, 2024, 2 PM ET\nAtlantic Bldg, Room 3400, University of Maryland, College Park\n \nHybrid (In-Person & Virtual):\nThis seminar will be held at 2 PM at Atlantic Bldg, Rm 3400 of University of Maryland. In-person attendance is welcome, with Zoom provided for virtual participants.\n \nAbstract:\nRising sea level, wind-driven tides, storm surge, and extreme precipitation events are increasingly threatening coastal communities. To become more resilient, coastal communities need trusted data and information that is accurate, affordable, and in near real-time to prepare for and respond to these events. Annapolis Maryland’s Cape St. Claire community town manager and Board of Directors have joined us along with MARACOOS and NOAA’s Coastal Marine Modeling Branch, to propose a pilot project to install a low-cost water sensor and provide data visualization, training, monitoring, and high-resolution model validation in real-time through GeoCollaborate, a data access and sharing technology developed through the federal government’s SBIR program.\nData from federal, state, and local agencies and organizations can help communities and non- expert decision makers build resilience plans and respond to climate change impacts. But they need an easy and timely means to access just the relevant data and training to understand and use it. This requires curated data from multiple sources accessed on a customized easy-to-use collaborative platform with data from providers in readily accessible formats, preferably through web services, and maintained in up-to-date trusted repositories or portals.\nDave and Ellen will discuss putting GeoCollaborate to work for communities and how it can increase data use in decision making and bring new users to the table. They will also talk about how a small community resilience effort can scale across Chesapeake Bay and the nation to better enable data-informed decision making.\n \nWebinar:\nEvent site: https://go.umd.edu/jonesprager\nZoom Webinar: https://go.umd.edu/jonespragerwebinar\nZoom Meeting ID: 925 8154 4687\nZoom password: essic\nUS Toll: +13017158592\nGlobal call-in numbers: https://umd.zoom.us/u/aMElEpvNu\n \nFor IT assistance:\nCazzy Medley: cazzy@umd.edu\n\nResources:\nSeminar schedule & archive: https://go.umd.edu/essicseminar\nSeminar Google calendar: https://go.umd.edu/essicseminarcalendar\nSeminar recordings on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ESSICUMD\n
