SUMMARY:Modeling and Monitoring of Irrigation for Better Understanding of Land-Atmosphere Interactions in Agricultural Areas
DESCRIPTION:This event has passed. See the seminar recording here:\n\n \n\n\nModeling and Monitoring of Irrigation for Better Understanding of Land-Atmosphere Interactions in Agricultural Areas\nDr. Patricia Lawston Parker\nNASA Goddard Space Flight Center\nMonday September 30, 2019, 12 PM\nESSIC Conference Room 4102, 5825 University Research Ct, College Park, MD 20740\nAbstract:\nWhen farmers use irrigation over large areas, it can make the air cooler and more humid, sometimes even changing how clouds form and where rain falls. For this reason, it is important to 1) monitor where, when, and how much irrigation water is used for agriculture, and 2) use this and other information towards improving weather models, and therefore forecasts, in the food baskets of the world. This talk will describe recent work in which NASA satellite platforms and modeling tools have played an essential role in the monitoring and modeling of irrigation, and in doing so, have helped to advance our understanding of human water management impacts on the earth system. \nBio-sketch:\nDr. Patricia Lawston Parker is a postdoctoral associate with ESSIC working in the Hydrological Sciences Lab at NASA GSFC. She joined ESSIC in 2017 after receiving her Ph.D. in Climatology at the University of Delaware. Her research interests include land-atmosphere interactions, satellite remote sensing of land surface variables, and weather, climate, and land surface modeling. Her research assesses and seeks to improve the representation of irrigation in models and investigates the impacts of irrigation on land surface states, fluxes, and the planetary boundary layer. \nWebinar info: \nEvent site: http://go.umd.edu/lawston-parker ( http://go.umd.edu/lawston-parker )\nEvent number: 731 456 406\nEvent password: essic\n——————————————————-\nTo join the online event\n——————————————————-\n1. Click here to join the online event.\nOr copy and paste the following link to a browser: \nhttps://umd.webex.com/umd/onstage/g.php?MTID=e81e71a14c6ff25f477ae17905bdfe5fd\n2.
