See the seminar recording here:\n﻿\n \n\nDr. George Huffman\nNASA Goddard Flight Space Center\nMonday May 13, 2019, 12:00-1:00 PM\nESSIC Conference Room 4102, 5825 University Research Ct, College Park, MD 20740\nAbstract:\nThe U.S. Global Precipitation Measurement mission (GPM) science team is developing a long-term dataset based on intercalibrated estimates from the international constellation of precipitation-relevant satellites and other data. The Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) merged precipitation product (IMERG) is computed at the half hour, 0.1° x 0.1° resolution globally in three “Runs”—Early, Late, and Final (4 hours, 14 hours, and 3.5 months after observation time, respectively).  GPM is well into computing the new Version 06, which will be the first time IMERG covers the last two decades and routinely provides morphed estimates in polar regions where the surface is snow- and ice-free.\n \nA few salient features of the IMERG algorithm will be summarized, then representative examples of IMERG products will be shown.  This starts with basic results, such as animations of maps, then extends to preliminary analyses of dataset characteristics.  For example, the diurnal cycle demonstrates improvements over V05.\n \nThe talk will end with a quick summary of the processing status and the future course of IMERG development.\n \nBio-sketch:\nDr. Huffman is a Research Physical Scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), Greenbelt, Maryland.  After completing a B.S. in Physics at The Ohio State University (1976) and a Ph.D. in Meteorology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1982), he was an Assistant Professor at University of Maryland, College Park, then moved to GSFC in 1988, where he consulted until entering government service in 2012.  Dr. Huffman’s primary focus has been the design, implementation, and extension of combined (satellite-gauge) estimates of global precipitation.  The resulting data sets include the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) monthly and daily products (carried out as a contribution to the World Climate Research Program, WCRP); the NASA Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis; and the successor NASA Global Precipitation Measurements (GPM) mission’s Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM.  Allied work includes estimating errors and extreme precipitation event statistics.  He is the Deputy Project Scientist for GPM, the lead for the GPM Multi-satellite Algorithm Team, and the Chief of the Mesoscale Atmospheric Processes Laboratory.  His research has resulted in 124 publications, 13 as first author, and numerous presentations. Recent awards include Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, 2019; a NASA Exceptional Service Medal, 2018; a NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal, 2015; and a NASA/GSFC Robert H.
