See the seminar recording here:\n\n \n\n\nProf. Sauleh Siddiqui \nJohns Hopkins University\nMonday December 16, 2019, 12 PM\nESSIC Conference Room 4102, 5825 University Research Ct, College Park, MD 20740\nAbstract:\nUnderstanding the regional resilience within climate-vulnerable countries requires a modeling framework that integrates food, energy, and water interactions. As part of a larger project on understanding such dynamics, this presentation presents a partial-equilibrium model of food production, distribution, storage, and consumption in Ethiopia. We outline the importance of explicitly modeling infrastructure, and present a discussion on the strength and weaknesses of these techniques when modeling different scenarios of external shocks. We outline the integration of this model with the energy system and provide techniques that can be used to assess resilience across spatial scales. We test a variety of scenarios to validate the model and provide insights on centralized and distributed strategies to improve resilience in climate-vulnerable countries. \nBio-sketch:\nSauleh Siddiqui is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Applied Mathematics &amp; Statistics at the Whiting School of Engineering of Johns Hopkins University, Co-Director of the Center for Systems Science &amp; Engineering, and Research Fellow at DIW Berlin. His primary area of research is mathematical modeling and data science applied to global change and human health for long-term resilience. His vision is to further interdisciplinary science through mathematical modeling by connecting diverse models of human and societal behaviour, function, and outcome. He received an A.B. in Mathematics and Public Policy from Franklin &amp; Marshall College and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics &amp; Statistics, and Scientific Computation from the University of Maryland, College Park.
