SUMMARY:Delivering NOAA Satellite Data From the Final Frontier to the Last Frontier

College Park, MD 20740. Refreshments will be available for those who attend in person, and a Zoom option is also available for virtual attendees.\nClick here to RSVP for attendance\nAbstract:\nNOAA-21, NOAA-20, and Suomi NPP are essential assets for weather forecasting and hazard detection in Alaska and its adjacent oceans. These satellites, part of the NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS), transmit data directly to ground stations worldwide via direct-broadcast technology. The Geographic Information Network of Alaska (GINA) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks manages three direct-broadcast antennas in interior Alaska. This presentation shows how JPSS products derived from direct-broadcast data support critical operations in Alaska: tracking precipitation, detecting and monitoring wildfires and floods, and analyzing sea ice movement. Looking ahead, a new generation of satellites (AWS, MetOp-SG, GOSAT-GW, JPSS-4/3) will be added to GINA’s portfolio. Our team looks forward to collaborating with the community to build the research-to-operations pipelines necessary to meet the challenges of the Last Frontier.\nBiosketch:\nDr. Jen Delamere earned an undergraduate physics degree at Johns Hopkins before zipping off to pursue a PhD in atmospheric science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Thirty years later, she is still in Alaska, serving as Director of GINA, where she ensures the rapid delivery of LEO satellite data across the state. She also keeps a foot on the ground as an instrument mentor for the DOE ARM facility in northern Alaska. Jen’s favorite part of her job is working with the Alaskans who use satellite products and her colleagues across the “lower 48” who help craft satellite innovations.
