Director's Welcome

Professor and Director

From the polar ice caps to the deserts of China, from the skies over Oklahoma to the Atlantic Ocean near Northeast Brazil, ESSIC scientists are busy examining the Earth's Systems through the various lenses of their particular specialties. Cutting across the traditional disciplinary boundaries of meteorology, oceanography, geology and geography, ESSIC seeks to better understand how the land, the oceans and the atmosphere react with, and influence, one another. These interrelationships profoundly affect the current and future health and welfare of our planet and all its inhabitants. Science progresses by posing informed questions and seeking the answers to them.

At ESSIC, some of the questions our researchers are exploring are: How do the ocean, atmosphere, and land surfaces interact to induce changes in climate? How can we get better at predicting long-term climate events like droughts and floods? What effects are human activities like CO2 emissions and deforestation...

Rong-Hua Zhang
Senior Research Scientist

Dr. Zhang is a Senior Research Scientist at ESSIC and Affiliate Professor at Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science. He received his Ph.D. in Climate Dynamics from Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1989. Previously, Dr. Zhang worked at
National Oceanographic Data Center/NOAA, University of Rhode Island, and Columbia University. His interests include ocean modeling, tropical ocean-atmosphere coupling, interanuual and decadal ocean variability, the interactions between the tropics and subtropics in the ocean, and ocean-related feedback parameterizations. In the past, he has constructed a suite of coupled tropical ocean-atmosphere models for El Nino-Southern Oscillation in the tropical Pacific, and more recently has developed novel approaches to using satellite data for climate modeling. In particular, he developed an intermediate coupled ocean-atmosphere model (known as ESSIC ICM) which has been used for routine ENSO prediction.
