ESSIC/CICS-MD ‘ClimateBits’ part of Weather and Climate Day

Newman in the field with Naval Research Laboratory

ESSIC Research Associate Thomas Newman was recently in the field with the Naval Research Laboratory as part of their DISTANCE/Sea ice physics projects. Newman spent 18 days in Barrow, AK and worked on in situ site selection and the analysis of the airborne snow radar data. New bills could change environmental policy and EPA procedure

Two potential new bills sponsored by Republicans in the House of Representatives could alter how the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) makes policy decisions. The Secret Science Reform Act of 2015, which passed the House on March 18, would limit the private sources and data the EPA could use to create regulations. High school senior Matthew Bielec, an intern within the ESSIC-administered Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS-MD), recently placed second in the earth and planetary science category at the Prince George’s Area science fair for his work with lightning data. Dr. Jingfeng Huang

Dr. Jingfeng Huang is an Assistant Research Scientist at CMNS-Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center. He graduated from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2000 with his Bachelor of Environmental Science and Engineering and a second Bachelor of Enterprise Management. Dr. Xiaolei Zou

With over 115 published papers and nearly 20 years of teaching experience under her belt, Dr. Xiaolei Zou left a tenured teaching position at Florida State University (FSU) to join ESSIC.

Zou first worked for FSU in 1989, where she helped the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) on developing a 4D-Var data assimilation system, a model that more precisely predicts forecasts.

She later joined the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to develop a 4D-Var system
