Berbery Named Deputy Director of the CICS Consortium
COLLEGE PARK, MD – Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites-Maryland (CICS-MD) Director, Hugo Berbery, was named Deputy Director of the overarching Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS) Consortium. The new position was created in part due to the demands being placed upon CICS Executive Director, Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm, who was appointed Interim Director of the University of Maryland (UMD) Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) in April 2016.
The Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS) was formed through a national consortium of academic, non-profit and community organizations with leadership from the University of Maryland (CICS-MD) and the University of North Carolina System through North Carolina State University (CICS-NC). CICS is administered by UMD ESSIC.
Berbery, who’s served as CICS-MD Director since July 2012, has both coordinated research projects between CICS-MD and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists and overseen more than 100 scientists–working on 120 tasks–with expenditures from [July 2015 – July 2016] of approximately $11.6 million dollars. According to Miralles-Wilhelm, the new position will allow Berbery to lead the reactivation of the CICS Council of Fellows and help develop a CICS strategic plan.
Berbery, whose new appointment officially began October 1, 2016, will also continue in his current capacity as the Director of CICS-MD.
