Adler, Ferraro, Gu and Wang to publish in Atmospheres

ESSIC scientists Robert Adler, Guojun Gu, Jian-Jian Wang and visiting associate research scientist Ralph Ferraro are co-authors of a new article in press at the journal Atmospheres.  It describes the upgraded monthly precipitation analysis provided by the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) and highlights some of the changes seen in 2017 global precipitation based on the new version.  Comparing seasonal precipitation from 2016 to 2017, the GPCP data shows that there was …

Baker-Yeboah is a NOAA Bronze Medal recipient

ESSIC assistant research scientist Sheekela Baker-Yeboah has won a NOAA Bronze Medal.  The Bronze Medal is the highest honor award granted by the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere.  It recognizes federal employees for superior performance.  Baker-Yeboah is part of a team at NESDIS being honored for the early deployment of the NOAA Jason-3 Ground System, avoiding additional cost and reducing risks to operations and forecasting. …

Murtugudde writes about expected changes in monsoon rainfall

Duncan and Farrell author article on sea ice collisions

ESSIC faculty specialist Kyle Duncan and associate research scientist Sinéad Farrell have a new article in press for the Annals of Glaciology about an interesting problem in measuring sea ice. Just as tectonic plates push up mountains where they meet, two pieces of sea ice push up snow ridges when they collide. Folmer publishes article in Results in Physics

ESSIC faculty specialist Michael Folmer published an article in Results in Physics titled “Utility of CrIS/ATMS profiles to diagnose extratropical transition.” It investigates the potential for using the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Cross-track Infrared Sounder/Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder to profile approaching hurricanes and their intensity. Science publishes Kenney’s response to essay in the magazine

ESSIC associate research professor Melissa Kenney and Anne Jefferson of Kent State University wrote a letter to Science magazine in response to an opinion piece it published in March. ESSIC researcher Ariana Sutton-Grier has published a new article titled “Wetlands In a Changing Climate: Science, Policy and Management.” The piece includes the importance of wetlands in absorbing carbon as well as how they are impacted by climate change. Miralles-Wilhelm co-authors analysis of Chinese water-energy nexus for World Bank

ESSIC Interim Director Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm is a co-author of a new working paper published by the World Bank. The article examines the intersection of water and energy in China, a country that relies heavily on water to support its coal-based energy production.
