The U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric System Research program has published a long-form feature article on Zhanqing Li, Professor at ESSIC and University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science. The article discusses his childhood spent fascinated by clouds and how it informed his current research on marine low clouds.
Veljko Petkovic, ESSIC/CISESS Assistant Research Scientist, is a primary convener for the AGU Fall Meeting 2021 session on Machine Learning applications on precipitation processes. This session, titled “Precipitation Through the Eyes of Machine Learning and Advanced Statistics: Remote Sensing, Uncertainties and Variability” will highlight contributions on precipitation-related AI/ML studies seeking physical implications, model interpretations, visualizations, remote sensing applications and uncertainty analyses that can identify novel elements in understanding of precipitation processes.
ESSIC Visiting Assistant Research Scientist Huan Wu has a new paper in Journal of Hydrometeorology titled “Assessment of Precipitation Error Propagation in Discharge Simulations over the Contiguous United States” alongside Naijun Zhou from UMD’s Department of Geographical Sciences.
The GEO Blue Planet Coastal Flooding Working Group has identified coastal bathymetry as a key information gap in many regions for the successful development and implementation of coastal flood forecasts. Emily Smail, Executive Director of the GEO Blue Planet Initiative and ESSIC/CISESS Senior Faculty Specialist, and Paul DiGiacomo, Chief of the Satellite Oceanography and Climatology Division in the NOAA/NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR), are working to organize an international community of practice to share information on satellite derived bathymetry.
ESSIC/CISESS Visiting Research Scientist Tom Smith has co-authored a new paper in the Journal of Climate published online on June 17th. This article, titled “Assessment and Intercomparison of NOAA Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (DOISST) version 2.1”, shows the relative quality of a NESDIS SST analysis of NOAA Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (DOISST) version 2.1. The paper shows that the current version of the analysis has skill comparable to other global SST analyses.
Shuiwang Duan, Department of Geology and Department of Environmental Science and Technology Assistant Research Scientist, and Sujay Kaushal, ESSIC and Department of Geology Associate Professor, are co-authors on a new paper in Applied Geochemistry titled “Changes in concentrations and source of nitrogen along the Potomac River with watershed land use”. Other co-authors include Erik J.Rosenfeldt, Jinliang Huang, and Sudhir Murthy.

ESSIC/CISESS Scientists Xi Shao, Sirish Uprety and Wen-hui Wang are contributors to a new book, Remote Sensing of Night-time Light, to be released on August 10th. Their chapter is on the assessment of straylight correction performance for the JPSS Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) day/night band using Dome-C and Greenland under lunar illumination. This book captures key methodological issues associated with pre-processing night-time light data, documents state of the art analysis methods, and explores a wide range of applications.
