As a now traditional part of the ESSIC end-of-year Holiday Party itinerary, two annual peer awards are presented for the year's best published research paper, as well as the staff employee of the year. At this year's December 8th event, ESSIC Interim Director Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm recognized two Center employees.
ESSIC Assistant Research Scientist Jingfeng Huang was recognized as the "best paper" award recipient for his first author article entitled, "CALIPSO inferred most probable heights of global dust and smoke layers." The paper, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, details the use of CALIPSO data–from satellite measurements of aerosols–to determine the most probable height of dust and smoke layers.

The annual staff award was presented to ESSIC OITC Helpdesk and Infrastructure Manager, Michael Maddox, for his day-to-day efforts and diligence in coordination of the ESSIC IT Helpdesk workflow.
Interestingly, Center faculty and staff are quite accustomed to seeing this year's award recipients working in close weekly collaboration with one another, given Huang's current role as ESSIC Seminar Coordinator and of course Maddox's role as ESSIC Technology Infrastructure Manager.
