Abstract:
Aquifers are a major source of freshwater for the global community and overexploitation of groundwater has led to depleted aquifers, land subsidence and degraded water quality in many parts of the world. Information on renewable groundwater is critically needed for monitoring and for sustainable development of groundwater.
In this presentation, I will discuss a global groundwater dataset generated from assimilating terrestrial water storage (TWS) derived from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites into the NASA Catchment model and its application for drought monitoring. In particular, evaluation results using data from nearly 4,000 wells located in different continents will be presented. Well selection criteria, limitation of the model and insights gained from GRACE data assimilation studies will be discussed. I will also share preliminary results on estimating groundwater recharge in the western U.S. using the Noah_MP model embedded in the Western States Land Data Assimilation System (WLDAS).
