Monday May 20, 2019, 12:00-1:00 PM

ESSIC Conference Room 4102, 5825 University Research Ct, College Park, MD 20740

Abstract:

Human activities influence the Earth system, with changes in emissions, land use, land cover, and land management all impacting temperature, precipitation, and other aspects of the Earth system. At the same time, changes in the Earth system have consequences for human activities. For example, increases in temperature alter energy demand, through changes in demand for heating and cooling. Changes in precipitation affect water availability for energy and agriculture. The combination of changes in temperature, precipitation and CO2 influence crop yields and thus alter land use and land cover. In this talk, I’ll provide an overview of the potential future evolution of the integrated human-Earth system, exploring the effects of humans on the Earth system, the Earth system on human activities, and potential feedbacks between the two.

Bio-sketch:

Kate Calvin is a scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Joint Global Change Research Institute in College Park, MD. Her research focuses on integrated human-Earth system modeling, including work on both the Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM), an integrated assessment model, and the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, an Earth system model. Her recent work has examined interlinkages between energy-water-land, human-Earth system feedbacks, and scenario development. She received BS degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Maryland and MS and PhD degrees in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University.
