ESSIC / CICS-MD assistant research scientist Jicheng Liu has a new article published by Advances in Meteorology titled “A Preliminary Assessment of the Impact of Assimilating Satellite Soil Moisture Data Products on NCEP Global Forecast System”.
The piece documents tests in data assimilation of satellite soil moisture into the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS). The soil moisture products used are from the operational Soil Moisture Operational Product System (SMOPS), the subject of one of Liu’s CICS Tasks. The researchers used the daily blended soil moisture product with Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) data assimilation.
In addition to Liu’s appointment with ESSIC / CICS-MD, he is also a SCSB/STAR/NESDIS/NOAA visiting scientist. His current research includes the development of soil moisture retrieval algorithms using data from microwave satellite sensors, such as AMSR2, SMOS and SMAP, and making the products readily available through SMOPS.
