Postdoctoral Associate for the development, implementation, and validation of data-driven cloud parameterizations for the NASA GEOS atmospheric model.

July 7, 2026

Department: UMD/ESSIC

Starting Salary: Commensurate with experience

Starting Title: Postdoctoral Associate

Closing Date: Open until filled

Duty Station: NASA/Goddard (Greenbelt, MD)

About the position:

This research focuses on the development, implementation, and validation of data-driven cloud parameterizations for the NASA GEOS atmospheric model. The incumbent will work on improving the representations of cloud-related processes, including cloud fraction, contrail representation, and cloud phase partitioning, with the goal of improving the physical realism and predictive skill of global atmospheric simulations.

The position will involve integrating machine learning and physically based approaches into an Earth system modeling framework, evaluating model performance against satellite, aircraft, and reanalysis datasets, and assessing the impacts of new parameterizations on cloud distributions, radiation, and climate-relevant diagnostics.

Primary Responsibilities

Background in atmospheric science, climate modeling, cloud physics, machine learning, or a related field. Experience with numerical modeling, scientific programming, and large geophysical datasets is desirable.

Qualifications

• U.S. Citizenship or Green Card holder or applicant from a non-designated country due to restrictions at Government facilities

• Ph.D. in atmospheric science, earth sciences, physics, or a closely related discipline

• Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, represent at meetings and conferences, publish research findings, and contribute to grant proposals

To Apply: Interested candidates should send a CV and a cover letter to anegri@umd.edu explaining how your qualifications meet the posted requirements.
