Postdoctoral Researcher in Passive Microwave Precipitation Remote Sensing

ESSIC is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with strong interest and experience in passive microwave remote sensing and modeling. The successful candidate will contribute to relevant projects for the Mesoscale Atmospheric Processes Laboratory (code 612) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Responsibilities may include:

  • Satellite precipitation retrieval development and validation
  • Microwave land surface emissivity model development, testing, and validation
  • Optimization of precipitation retrievals for land surfaces and snow cases
  • Radiometer constellation calibration     
  • Contributions to peer reviewed research publications, conference orals and posters, white papers, and relevant agency and international working groups

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Physics, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with radiative transfer (microwave), satellite data assimilation and retrieval techniques.
  • Proficiency in Python programming language and experience/exposure to other programming languages (Fortran)
  • Prior experience in data visualization using Python tools.
  • Good understanding of Unix/Linux OS and scripting.
  • Excellent skills in manipulating large volumes of data; familiarity with common data formats, such as netCDF and HDF5.
  • Prior knowledge and hands-on experience in machine learning (ML) algorithm implementation is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Green Card holder or applicant from a non-designated country due to restrictions at Government facilities
