CISESS

The Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) also administers the Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS), which is sponsored by the NOAA National Satellite, Data, and Information Services (NESDIS) and the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) was created in June 2019 through an agreement between the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

CISESS is hosted by ESSIC and builds on NOAA’s long-term partnership with UMD, which includes the Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites from 2009 to 2019 and the Cooperative Institute for Climate Studies from 1984 to 2009. CISESS performs collaborative research aimed at enhancing NOAA’s ability to use satellite observations and Earth System models to advance the national climate mission, including monitoring, understanding, predicting and communicating information on climate variability and change.
