Last month, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) held its annual Fall meeting from December 11 to 15. ESSIC scientists presented and attended both virtually and in-person in San Francisco, CA. The following is a sample (not all-encompassing) of the ESSIC/CISESS talks, presentations, and posters given at the event.
Xin-Zhong Liang has been elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). He joins 55 other individuals in the 2023 Class of Fellows. Since 1962, the AGU Union Fellows Committee has selected less than 0.1% of members as new Fellows. AGU, a nonprofit organization that supports 130,000 enthusiasts to experts worldwide in Earth and space sciences, annually recognizes a select number of individuals as part of its Honors and Recognition program.

Ross Salawitch has been elected as an American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) Fellow. He joins 53 other individuals in the 2022 Class of Fellows. Since 1962, the AGU Union Fellows Committee has selected less than 0.1% of members as new Fellows. Jing Wei was announced as American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) 2022 Atmospheric Sciences Section James R. Holton Award recipient. The James R. Holton Award is awarded usually to one young scientist across all disciplines of atmospheric sciences to acknowledge their outstanding scientific research and accomplishments at an early stage of career within three years of receiving Ph.D. Wei is the youngest winner of this award since its establishment in 2004 with a little over one year after Ph.D.
ESSIC/CISESS had several talks, e-lightning sessions, posters, virtual town halls, and tutorials at this year’s American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, held in New Orleans and online from December 13 to 17.
As a part of American Geophysical Union’s 2021 Annual Meeting, AGU is hosting a contest in which scientists submitted photos and videos depicting their science without actually saying what science they study.
Veljko Petkovic, ESSIC/CISESS Assistant Research Scientist, is a primary convener for the AGU Fall Meeting 2021 session on Machine Learning applications on precipitation processes. This session, titled “Precipitation Through the Eyes of Machine Learning and Advanced Statistics: Remote Sensing, Uncertainties and Variability” will highlight contributions on precipitation-related AI/ML studies seeking physical implications, model interpretations, visualizations, remote sensing applications and uncertainty analyses that can identify novel elements in understanding of precipitation processes.
ESSIC/CISESS Associate Research Scientist Isaac Moradi is convening and chairing three sessions at the American Geophysical Union Fall meeting, occurring virtually this year due to COVID-19. The sessions are “Data Assimilation, Reanalysis, and Observing System Simulation Experiments I”, “Data Assimilation, Reanalysis, and Observing System Simulation Experiments II Posters”, and “Calibration and Validation of Satellite Earth Observation Systems I Posters”.
