Vogel Presents on Using Oceanographic Satellite Data in K-12

Ron Vogel, ESSIC / CISESS Senior Faculty Specialist, gave a lecture at the Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Education Annual Conference, a conference for K-12 environmental science teachers to explore using oceanographic satellite data in K-12 classrooms. This area has traditionally seen satellite data as too complex for teaching about the environment.

Smail Involved in Launch of Plastics Data Challenge in Asia

ESSIC/CISESS Senior Faculty Specialist Emily Smail is on the advisory council of the Plastics Data Challenge for Asia, a global innovation challenge to end ocean plastic pollution. The challenge will source, support, and scale innovative solutions that address the leakage of plastic waste into the environment.  Participants will co-create technologies, methodologies, and working prototypes to discover solutions that address the lack of data across Asia’s plastics value chains as well as …

Mishonov and Reagan Published on Gulf Stream Long-Term Variability

Two ESSIC/CISESS scientists, Associate Research Scientist Alexey Mishonov and Senior Faculty Specialist James Reagan, recently co-authored a paper in Scientific Reports titled, “Resilience of the Gulf Stream path on decadal and longer timescales”. The Gulf Stream is a part of the strongest oceanic pacemaker of the Atlantic Ocean and perhaps the entire Earth’s climate.  Understanding the long-term variability of the Gulf Stream path is critical for resolving how the ocean works as a …

Brown Published in Ecological Forecasting Initiative Blog

ESSIC/CISESS Visiting Research Scientist Christopher Brown recently wrote a blog entitled “Making Ecological Forecasts Operational: Some Lessons Learned By NOAA” for the Ecological Forecasting Initiative (EFI) website as a member of the EFI Knowledge Transfer and Partners Working Group. The contents are a consolidation of ‘lessons learned’ from a 2014 unpublished study conducted by NOAA’s Ecological Forecasting Roadmap.  The study compared ecological forecasting projects that had …
