Kenney is Chapter Lead Author for 3rd National Climate Assessment Draft

ESSIC Research Assistant Professor Melissa Kenney is the lead author for Decision Support Chapter of the 3rd U.S. National Climate Assessment. The National Climate Assessment and Development Advisory Committee (NCADAC was established under the Department of Commerce in December 2010 and is supported through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Winter Weather

I’ve been a fan of snowstorms since I can remember, probably because I grew up in the Willamette Valley of Oregon where significant snow is a once-per-decade event (at least there was one storm of consequence in the 10 years that I remember).  I moved to Silver Spring in June 1961 and rewarded with consistently snowy winters – the 60s averaged almost 2’ per year at National airport (DCA).  Occasionally we would have a winter without much snow, but it was rare to get two in a row.  Last

Over 35 UMD, NOAA, and NASA scientists, met at the M-Square Research Park Friday, January 18, 2013, to discuss current and emerging cryospheric research opportunities. Zhang’s ESSIC ICM Outperformance Continues

At the December 2012 NOAA CPC ocean briefing, it was reported that the ESSIC researcher Rong-Hua Zhang’s Intermediate Coupled Model (ICM) has continued to outperform others of its kind, in predicting the “Nino 3.4 Region” Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies, which classify El Niño (La Niña) episodes.
