Beck and O’Connor promote NOAA coral reef programs in Guam

ESSIC post-doctoral associate Brian Beck and Sarah O’Connor of the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) traveled to Guam in late January to improve local involvement with the NOAA Coral Reef Information System (CoRIS). They conducted a data management workshop for local coral reef stakeholders where they provided overviews of CoRIS and NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) as well as a detailed explanation of how to submit data to NCEI. Berbery to publish in International Journal of Climatology

ESSIC research professor Hugo Berbery has an article in press at the International Journal of Climatology.  The study investigated the ability of a selection of global climate models (GCMs) of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) to simulate the mean climate and variability in a site in South America. They tested temperature and precipitation variables for northeastern Argentina, a region that exhibits frequent extreme events….

Berbery and Lukens to publish in Journal of Climate

ESSIC research professor Hugo Berbery and doctoral student Katherine Lukens have a new publication that will be released in the March 1 issue of the Journal of Climate. The research details the role of strong storm tracks on winter weather. Lukens used the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) to examine this relationship. Sutton-Grier publishes in Sustainability

ESSIC associate research professor Ariana Sutton-Grier is the lead author of a new paper published in Sustainability titled “Investing in Natural and Nature-Based Infrastructure: Building Better Along Our Coasts.” The paper examines the need for green infrastructure on U.S. coasts to address issues such as flooding and erosion. ESSIC scientists partner with World Meteorological Organization

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) representatives and five well-known lightning scientists from across the globe recently gathered at CICS-MD for a three day meeting. The WMO recently added lightning to its list of essential climate variables, and this meeting sought to begin the process of defining what this means. Mishonov discusses World Ocean Database at ESSIC seminar

ESSIC assistant research scientist Alexey Mishonov gave an ESSIC seminar on Jan. 29 in College Park to a group of about 20 NOAA and UMD scientists. His talk was entitled “Supporting the World Ocean Database (WOD): Archiving, Processing, and Analyzing in situ Ocean Data.” The WOD is the largest collection of quality-controlled ocean profile data available internationally.
