With Halloween behind us, wintery temps are fast approaching College Park! This year, we are resurrecting the historic ESSIC Annual Snow Prediction Pool. This is your opportunity to show off your weather prediction skills to your colleagues and earn bragging rights for the entire 2021-22 snow season.
In the form below, you can make your own forecast predictions in terms of the date of the first one-inch snowfall, as well as the seasonal snowfall total. Our committee will decide the winner using measurements gathered by the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS).
To assist in your predictions, you may want to take a look at the CoCoRaHS Mapping System, which allows you to view the precipitation measurements in a particular area during a particular date range. We will be focusing on the College Park area, specifically the Hyattsville 0.7 N station, but will be taking into account the data from all nearby stations. The image above depicts CoCoRaHS’s measurements from the historic 2016 winter storm, with the Hyattsville station circled in red.
Please submit your predictions by the deadline of Wednesday, November 24. The winners of each category will be enshrined on the wall of ESSIC’s Facebook page at the conclusion of the 2021-22’ winter season and will also be recognized at the 2022 ESSIC Holiday Party.
