UMD ESSIC Director and professor Antonio Busalacchi has been named “Chair-Elect” of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) “Section W” on Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences. Busalacchi’s term within the section’s governing body will consist of 3 distinct cycles: Chair Elect, Chair, and finally Retiring Chair.
When asked about the significance of Section W within AAAS and what objectives he might hope to see realized during his tenure, Busalacchi recalled both a recent historic climatic event and the diversity of sciences throughout AAAS.
“Superstorm Sandy once again illustrated the importance of the atmospheric and hydrospheric sciences across a backdrop of climate change,” said Busalacchi. However, above and beyond just Section W – given the breadth and depth of the sciences within AAAS – my term provides an opportunity to reach out across the whole of the organization to look at impacts of vulnerability and how we can better serve society through the advances in our science.”
The term of each stage of Busalacchi’s appointment-cycle is provided below.
- Chair-Elect: February 19, 2013 through February 17, 2014
- Chair: February 18, 2014 through February 16, 2015
- Retiring Chair: February 17, 2015 through February 15, 2016
