Salawitch selected as member of UMD ScienceBEAT team

ESSIC / AOSC Professor Ross Salawich is part of a UMD collaborative effort called ScienceBEAT that will teach students about climate change at three area high schools.   The program, which is funded through the provision of a two-year $105,000 seed grant from UMD’s Council on the Environment (ConE), is designed to supplement existing lessons in the curriculum and not replace them.   Salawich is one of five UMD professors who comprise the ScienceBEAT team….

Boisvert lead author of new study published in GRL

ESSIC Research Associate Linette Boisvert is the lead author of a recently published study in Geophysical Research Letters, which suggests the Arctic is becoming wetter and warmer.  The study analyzed ten years of Arctic data (2003 – 2013) collected by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument.   During that period, average air temperatures above the Arctic Ocean rose by 1.5 degrees Celsius while the temperature at the sea and ice surface rose by 2.5 …

UMD’s Busalacchi Named Co-Chair of NRC’s Decadal Survey for Earth Observations

Antonio Busalacchi, professor of atmospheric and ocean science at the University of Maryland and director of the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, has been appointed co-chair of the National Research Council’s Decadal Survey for Earth Science and Applications from Space. 1,800 years of global ocean cooling halted by global warming

Prior to the advent of human-caused global warming in the 19th century, the surface layer of Earth’s oceans had undergone 1,800 years of a steady cooling trend, according to a new study. During the latter half of this cooling period, the trend was most likely driven by large and frequent volcanic eruptions.
