Busalacchi on Capitol Hill, Fox45 News

ESSIC Director Professor Antonio Busalacchi spent two days on Capitol Hill this month discussing a new bill to improve seasonal weather forecasts.   Busalacchi visited with U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren among others as part of the talks.  Busalacchi also appeared on Fox Baltimore Television affiliate Fox45 in a segment on the effects of the west coast drought on California’s wine industry and how Maryland vineyards and prices might be impacted as a result….

McNally participates in SMAP field campaign

ESSIC Research Associate Amy McNally participated in the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite calibration and validation field campaign in the Australian Yanco region.     The campaign included ground soil moisture and vegetation sampling and aircraft active and passive L-band sensor measurements coincident with observatory passes over the region.  The campaign was conducted from May 2 through May 22 and included scientists from Australia, Netherlands, Germany, France …

Petty Invited to NGPR Leadership Symposium

ESSIC Research Associate Alek Petty was invited to the 2015 New Generation Polar Researcher (NGPR) Leadership Symposium held May 2–9 on Catalina Island, California. The workshop was limited to scientists who completed their PhD between 1/1/2009 to 10/30/2014 who had polar research experience in any discipline. Tian mentored student recognized for storm tracking research

AOSC graduate student Rebekah Esmaili placed first at the University of Maryland’s recent Graduate Research Interaction Day for her storm tracking research utilizing infrared satellite observations. Esmaili, who works under Dr. Yudong Tian, an ESSIC Associate Research Scientist located at NASA/GSFC, has been working with the researcher since summer 2012.  Her work under Tian has included observing global storm data and using infrared satellites to observe remote areas more clearly.
