Congratulations to ESSIC Associate Research Scientist Jordan Borak, newly elected Professional-Track Faculty (PTK) representative for the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) on the UMD Senate!

The University Senate, composed of faculty, staff, students, and administrators, is one of the largest and most influential governing bodies at the University of Maryland. As a member of the senate, Borak will help advise the University President on campus policy matters and concerns, including education, budget, personnel, campus-community, long range plans, facilities, and faculty, staff and student affairs. He joins current ESSIC Senator Isaac Moradi and 11 other CMNS PTK on the Senate.

Borak’s work with ESSIC focuses mainly on remote sensing of land surface properties, and on vegetation parameters in particular. He is a member of the ICESat-2 Science Team, where he serves as Principal Investigator on a project designed to enhance satellite-derived vegetation roughness estimates with ICESat-2 observations. He also serves as Co-Investigator on NASA’s National Climate Assessment Land Data Assimilation System (NCA-LDAS) project, and works on a NIST-funded study that uses satellite observations to assess community resilience in Puerto Rico within the context of Hurricane Maria.
