Li named AAAS Fellow

Zhanqing Li, a University of Maryland atmospheric and oceanic science professor and Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) researcher, was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on Nov. 23.

Li and 346 other fellows in the 2015 cohort were chosen “in recognition of their contributions to innovation, education, and scientific leadership,” according to AAAS. Li, who has been a UMD professor since 2001, has made his mark as a researcher, authoring 220 articles in leading journals and books. His work on clouds, aerosols and Earth’s radiation budget has yielded important insights. And as a recent president of the Chinese-American Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (COAA), Li has participated in community-building and networking. He is also an American Geophysical Union (AGU) fellow and an editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research.

Li said he is “pleased to be an honorable member in this world's largest science community.”

Since 1874, AAAS executives, administrators and current fellows have nominated scientists for the title based on their “meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications,” according to AAAS. Li is the 81st faculty member of UMD’s College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences to become an AAAS fellow. This year’s class of fellows will be recognized in February in Washington, D.C., at AAAS’s annual meeting.
