ESSIC / AOSC Professor Raghu Murtugudde recently wrote an op-ed published in Newsweek titled “Global Human Population Isn’t Going To Explode—But That Doesn’t Mean We’re Safe”.
The piece focuses on the current alarm surrounding the world’s rapid population growth, a phenomena warranting a steady call for population reduction in order to meet the emission targets set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Murtugudde surmises that overpopulation warnings ignore several key factors, including the global trade network, which transport emissions along with goods and services and lowered fertility rates among women, which corresponds to an unintended upward bump in per capita consumption.
Raghu Murtugudde is an ESSIC / AOSC scientist and professor as well as an affiliate professor for the Geology department at University of Maryland, College Park. He works primarily in climate studies, exploring the co-evolution of life and climate and what it means for sustainability. He also writes a blog hosted on the ESSIC website.
