ESSIC / AOSC Professor Ross Salawitch was quoted in a recent Baltimore Sun article, published prior to the April 2017 “March for Science” event held in Washington, D.C. In the piece titled, “Maryland researchers see March for Science as way to raise public trust, support for discovery,” Salawitch was quoted expressing his support of the event, including his belief that future scientists need to use their voices to raise greater awareness. Salawitch was among many area scientists, including other faculty and graduate students from the University of Maryland, who participated in the event. Conversely, ESSIC / AOSC Professor Raghu Murtugudde offered a differing prospective in the same article. Murtugudde noted that the march was not the best way to increase advocacy, particularly since the event was coinciding with Earth Day, which he felt was in danger of being politicalized.
