The American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting was held virtually this year from January 23 to 27. Gassó and Zamora Co-Author SOLAS Science Plan

Santiago Gassó is one of the co-authors in the recently released science plan by the US Surface Ocean – Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS), a global and multidisciplinary research project established to provide international science coordination and capacity building. SOLAS is focused on understanding the key biogeochemical-physical interactions and feedbacks between the ocean and atmosphere that are critical elements of climate and global biogeochemical cycles.

Extreme Rainfall Slows the Global Economy

Xin-Zhong Liang was recently published in Nature’s “News and Views” section giving his insight on new research that reported a comprehensive assessment of changes in gross regional product (GRP) relating to excessive precipitation. The study concluded that increases in the numbers of wet days and in extreme daily rainfall dramatically reduces worldwide macroeconomic growth rates.

Gasso Participates in Remote Sensing International Workshop

On December 1 -3, two members of code 613 participated in an international workshop hosted by the European agency Eumesat and the SOLAS project: “Remote Sensing for Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions Studies and Applications Workshop”. The meeting had an assortment of presentations and discussion panels as well as demonstration of the web and cloud interfaces available for data discovery. Santiago Gassó (ESSIC) participated as one the science organizing committee members, as a panelist and convener.

Gassó Gives Keynote Talk at Dust Symposium

ESSIC Associate Research Scientist Santiago Gassó was a keynote speaker at the international Blowing South: Southern Hemisphere Dust Symposium held November 8-10, 2021 and organized virtually from Chile. The talk was given during the Present-day: Dynamics session and it was entitled “Southern South America dust activity in relation to long range transport to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean”. No recording was taken of the talk, but slides are available upon request.

Web of Science has honored Dr. Zhanqing Li, Professor at ESSIC and University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, as a Highly Cited Researcher, an honor bestowed to fewer than 6,200, or about 0.1%, of the world’s researchers, in 21 research fields and across multiple fields.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric System Research program has published a long-form feature article on Zhanqing Li, Professor at ESSIC and University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science. The article discusses his childhood spent fascinated by clouds and how it informed his current research on marine low clouds.
