Zhanqing Li Joins Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Editorial Board

Dr. Zhanqing Li, Professor at ESSIC and University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, recently joined the editorial board of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, a not-for-profit international scientific journal dedicated to the publication and public discussion of high-quality studies investigating the Earth’s atmosphere and the underlying chemical and physical processes.

ESSIC Assistant Research Scientist Julie Nicely is principal investigator on a project, titled “A Diagnostic Package to Facilitate and Enhance Chemical Mechanism Implementations Within Regional and Global Atmospheric Chemistry Models”, that just earned an EPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grant for Chemical Mechanisms to Address New Challenges in Air Quality Modeling.

Farquhar Named 2020 UMD Distinguished University Professor

Professor James Farquhar of the University of Maryland (UMD) Department of Geology and the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) has been named a 2020 UMD Distinguished University Professor. The title of Distinguished University Professor is the highest academic honor bestowed by the university. Considered a national achievement, this award given to just 7% of tenured faculty honors impact and significant contribution to the nominee’s field, knowledge, profession, and/or practice.

Strategic Policy Action Can Protect Wetlands and Enhance Resilience, Proposes Sutton-Grier

Visiting Associate Research Professor Ariana Sutton-Grier has a new article about the importance of wetlands in mitigating the consequences of natural disasters. The paper, titled “Protecting wetlands for people: Strategic policy action can help wetlands mitigate risks and enhance resilience”, is in the June 2020 issue of Environmental Science and Policy.

Farquhar Named AGU Fellow

Professor James Farquhar of the University of Maryland (UMD) Department of Geology and the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) has been named a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). AGU Fellows are recognized for their scientific eminence in the Earth and space sciences. Farquhar joins several ESSIC scientists who have received this honor, including Drs.
