Ringerud, You Win IEEE Paper Award with New Study on An Active–Passive Microwave Land Surface Database

A paper co-authored by ESSIC/CISESS Assistant Research Scientists Sarah Ringerud and Yalei You was selected as the winner of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society 2020 Transactions Prize Paper Award. The paper, titled “An Active–Passive Microwave Land Surface Database From GPM”, is also by coauthors S. Joseph Munchak and Ludovic Brucker from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and international researchers Iris de Gelis and Catherine Prigent.

Operation IceBridge Awarded Robert H. Goddard Award

Last June, NASA’s Operation IceBridge mission, an ongoing effort to monitor changes in polar ice, was awarded a Robert H. Goddard award for Science Teams. On this team is Alek Petty, ESSIC Associate Research Scientist, who has made substantial contributions as a member of the missision’s Project Science Office.

Nicely Earns Grant to Improve Air Quality Models

ESSIC Assistant Research Scientist Julie Nicely is principal investigator on a project, titled “A Diagnostic Package to Facilitate and Enhance Chemical Mechanism Implementations Within Regional and Global Atmospheric Chemistry Models”, that just earned an EPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grant for Chemical Mechanisms to Address New Challenges in Air Quality Modeling.

Farquhar Named 2020 UMD Distinguished University Professor

Professor James Farquhar of the University of Maryland (UMD) Department of Geology and the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) has been named a 2020 UMD Distinguished University Professor. The title of Distinguished University Professor is the highest academic honor bestowed by the university. Considered a national achievement, this award given to just 7% of tenured faculty honors impact and significant contribution to the nominee’s field, knowledge, profession, and/or practice.

Ferraro Awarded NOAA Bronze Medal

A NOAA group including ESSIC/CISESS Visiting Associate Research Scientist Ralph Ferraro was recently awarded a NOAA Bronze Medal, the highest honor that can be granted by NOAA administrators. The group also included NESDIS recipients Al Wissman, Karen St. Germain, Mitch Goldberg, and Harry Cikanek, the Director of the NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research.

American Meteorological Society Awards Tianning Su

ESSIC/CISESS Graduate Student Tianning Su was selected for a speaking award at the recent American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting. He received the award from the judges at the 24th Conference on Integrated Observing and Assimilation Systems for the Atmosphere, Oceans, and Land Surface (IOAS-AOLS). His talk was entitled, “Retrieving Aerosol Optical Depth Retrievals over Land by Constructing the Relationship of Spectral Surface Reflectances through Deep Learning: Application in Himawari-8.”
