ESSIC research scientist Dorothy Hall is a newly elected AGU Fellow for 2018. Hall presents at International Geoscience Remote Sensing Symposium in Spain

Cullather contributes to large-scale study about Antarctica’s ice loss

Eighty-four scientists contributed to a study that gained global publicity after its recent publication in Nature. Headlines and news alerts reported on the grave findings: Antarctica’s ice loss has been accelerating rapidly. ESSIC visiting research scientists Ralph Ferraro and Huan Meng, post-doctoral associate Jun Dong, faculty specialist Michael Folmer, associate research scientist Cezar Kongoli, and assistant research scientist Nai-Yu Wang have an article in Eos, which is published by the American Geophysical Union. Duncan and Farrell author article on sea ice collisions

ESSIC faculty specialist Kyle Duncan and associate research scientist Sinéad Farrell have a new article in press for the Annals of Glaciology about an interesting problem in measuring sea ice. Just as tectonic plates push up mountains where they meet, two pieces of sea ice push up snow ridges when they collide. These are called “pressure ridges” and the snow above the flat sea ice is called the “sail.” The article describes a new methodology to measure the …

ESSIC scientists to publish article on snowfall detection algorithm

ESSIC associate research scientist Cezar Kongoli, visiting research scientist Huan Meng, post-doctoral associate Jun Dong and visiting associate research scientist Ralph Ferraro have a new article accepted for publication in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society. The authors document a new satellite algorithm for snowfall detection. The scientists found that the key variables for snowfall detection were cloud thickness, relative humidity and vertical velocity….
