University of Maryland ESSIC Hosts Chesapeake Bay & Puget Sound Health Workshops: Integrating Climate and Environmental Information with Disease Surveillance to Address Pathogens and Algal Toxins of Concern to Public Health
COLLEGE PARK, MD – University of Maryland’s Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) will be hosting a workshop on Feb. 21/22 focused on the Chesapeake Bay. The workshop will be jointly sponsored by the NOAA Oceans and Human Health Initiative (OHHI) and by the University of Maryland Initiative: Climate Change Responding to User Needs (CIRUN).
The goal of the workshops is to identify how climate and environmental science can provide improved information support for decisions and policies of State and local public health agencies. The majority of the workshop will take place in three breakout groups, preceded by three plenary panels: public health objectives and needs, environmental and health science perspective, and forecasting contributions.
The principal product of the Chesapeake Bay workshop will be a final report which integrates the recommendations from the breakout groups.
There will be 42 participants from organizations including UMD, ESSIC, NOAA, FDA, NIH, Maryland Dept. Health & Mental Hygiene and the Maryland Department of the Environment, as well as other national and international universities and institutions.
