On Saturday, May 16th, Climate Central, a Princeton-based science and journalism organization, will team with the National Aquarium and some of Maryland’s leading environmental organizations to launch Weather & Climate Day (W+C Day).
The event, which will be held at the National Aquarium’s downtown Baltimore location, hopes to both engage and educate students and their families about climate change and how its effects will influence their futures.
Students will be a prominently featured component of W+C Day, with an event-sponsored presentation contest that asks students from grades 5–8 and 9–12 to answers one of the events theme-related questions pertaining to climate change.
ESSIC researcher Stephanie Schollaert Uz, lead architect of ESSIC/CICS-MD “ClimateBits” multimedia project will participate in the day’s events through the presentation of ClimateBits videos on the aquarium’s Science on a Sphere animated globe.
Initially enlisted in support of the event through her past association with the Maryland Science Center–the originally planned host venue–Schollaert Uz was asked to relocate with the event, when organizers transferred it to the National Aquarium given its larger visitorship.
The W+C Day event host committee includes–among others–the University of Maryland Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC), NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, NOAA, Maryland Department of the Environment, and the Maryland Department of Education.
