ESSIC post-doctoral associate Brian Beck and Sarah O’Connor of the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) traveled to Guam in late January to improve local involvement with the NOAA Coral Reef Information System (CoRIS). ESSIC associate research professor Ariana Sutton-Grier is the lead author of a new paper published in Sustainability titled “Investing in Natural and Nature-Based Infrastructure: Building Better Along Our Coasts.” The paper examines the need for green infrastructure on U.S. coasts to address issues such as flooding and erosion. World Meteorological Organization (WMO) representatives and five well-known lightning scientists from across the globe recently gathered at CICS-MD for a three day meeting. The WMO recently added lightning to its list of essential climate variables, and this meeting sought to begin the process of defining what this means. ESSIC assistant research scientist Alexey Mishonov gave an ESSIC seminar on Jan. 29 in College Park to a group of about 20 NOAA and UMD scientists. His talk was entitled “Supporting the World Ocean Database (WOD): Archiving, Processing, and Analyzing in situ Ocean Data.” The WOD is the largest collection of quality-controlled ocean profile data available internationally. ESSIC hosted three meetings at the end of January: NASA-ESA Snow On Sea Ice (NESOSI), Program on Arctic Regional Climate Assessment (PARCA) and Operation IceBridge (OIB).    The first Annual NESOSI meeting was held at ESSIC on Jan. 23. Both NASA and ESA collect snow on sea ice measurements and work to produce an accurate Arctic-wide snow pack for obtaining Arctic sea ice thickness and volume.
