McNally’s Model Used in New FEWS Special Report

ESSIC Research Associate Amy McNally recently contributed to a Famine Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Special Report on drought in Southern Africa. Sutton-Grier Wins Innovations in Sustainability Science Award

The Ecological Society of America (ESA) announced March 23 that their ESA Innovations in Sustainability Science Award will be given to ESSIC researcher Ariana Sutton-Grier. Petty and Boisvert contribute to NSIDC article on sea ice decline

ESSIC’s Alek Petty and Linette Boisvert contributed to a recent National Snow and Ice Data Center web-site post, regarding a record decline in Artic sea ice levels during February 2016. The average ice extent was the lowest on satellite record for the month, with data suggesting that the February ice extent has decreased by 3 percent per decade since 1979. Petty Selected as 2016 IASC Early Career Fellow

ESSIC Post-doctoral Associate Alek Petty was recently appointed by the International Arctic Science Committee’s Cryosphere Working Group as an Early Career Fellow. The three-year appointment will allow Petty to expand on his research in polar science, while engaging in leading-edge scientific activities at a circumarctic and international level. NOAAPORT Installation at UMD M-Square

Following nearly three years of coordination, a NOAAPORT Satellite Broadcast Network (SBN) antenna, receiver, and server have been installed at the University of Maryland.  A 3.7 meter antenna now sits atop the M-Square Building which hosts the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) and the Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS-MD).

Salawitch quoted in Science

Antonio Busalacchi Elected to National Academy of Engineering

Antonio Busalacchi, professor of atmospheric and ocean science at the University of Maryland and director of the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).
