Dr. Zhanqing Li, Professor at ESSIC and University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science is a new recipient of the Distinguished University Professor Award, the highest academic honor that the University of Maryland confers upon a faculty member. Considered a national achievement, this award given to just 7% of tenured faculty honors impact and significant contribution to the nominee’s field, knowledge, profession, and/or practice.
Li receives this award as an acknowledgement of his research and expertise as a world leader in atmospheric radiation, remote sensing of clouds and aerosols and their climate effects.
“I am excited and honored to receive this award.” says Li.
Li joined the University of Maryland in 2001. He received his PhD from McGill University in 1991. Since then, he has engaged in a wide range of studies concerning climate change, atmospheric physics, terrestrial and atmospheric environment. He developed a suite of remote sensing algorithms products and systems (albedo, BRDF, fire hotspot and burned area, SRB, PAR, UV, cloud and aerosol parameters, precipitation, etc.). He also drastically revised the solar disposition between the atmosphere and surface, deeply engaged in cloud absorption anomaly debate, investigated aerosol properties and their direct and indirect effects, systematically studied China’s environmental and climate problems. He led two international experiments and deployment of the US DOE’s ARM Mobile Facility in China. As of now, he has had over 380 peer-reviewed SCI publications with total citations over 25K and h-index of 67 by Publons.
Li will be recognized at the next University Convocation to celebrate this honor. In addition, $5,000 will be provided each year to support his instructional and scholarly activities at the University of Maryland.
