Ferraro Awarded NOAA Bronze Medal

A NOAA group including ESSIC/CISESS Visiting Associate Research Scientist Ralph Ferraro was recently awarded a NOAA Bronze Medal, the highest honor that can be granted by NOAA administrators. The group also included NESDIS recipients Al WissmanKaren St. GermainMitch Goldberg, and Harry Cikanek, the Director of the NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research.

 

The team was nominated by the Office of Under Secretary “for conducting a study on the potential effects of 5G interference on the 24GHz remote sensing band, and working closely with the NOAA Acting Administrator and Department of Commerce leadership to communicate the risks to satellite remote sensing and weather prediction if safeguards are not in place.”

 

Ferraro is the Chief of the NOAA/NESDIS Satellite Climate Studies Branch (collocated with CISESS in College Park, MD) and an ESSIC / CISESS Visiting Associate Research Scientist.  He is also a member of NASA’s Precipitation Measurement Mission and AMSR science teams, rapporteur to the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites for the International Precipitation Working Group  and former chair of the AMS and NWA committees on Satellite Meteorology.
