ESSIC / CICS-MD Associate Professor Sujay Kaushal has a new publication in the December 2018 issue of Biogeochemistry titled, “Diverse water quality responses to extreme climate events: an introduction”. This piece introduces and summarizes a special issue on “Extreme Climate Events Impact Water Quality” which also appears in the journal. A graphic from Kaushal’s piece also appears on the cover of the journal, as seen in the image to the left.
The piece discusses the origins, evolution, and resilience of diverse water quality responses to extreme climate events. It highlights several conclusions, one of which is that river restoration strategies for reducing pollution from extreme events can be improved by preserving and restoring floodplains, wetlands and oxbow ponds.
In addition to his work at ESSIC, Kaushal is an Associate Professor at the Department of Geology. His current research projects focus primarily on understanding the interactive effects of land use and climate change on water resources.
