ESSIC Research Scientist Isaac Moradi presented a talk on October 19, 2021 as part of the Howard County High Schools G/T Intern/Mentor program on the Earth and Space Science fundamentals. He discussed the fundamentals of designing satellite instruments and how the remotely sensed observations collected by satellites are used to monitor the earth and its environment. He further provided examples on how the observations are used to improve the weather forecasts, evaluate extreme weathers such as tropical cyclones, or make use of these observations from transportation to agricultural practices. The seminar was followed by a Q&A session to answer the questions from a large group of authentic students hoping to continue their study in STEM fields. Moradi was well-received by the students, who praised his in-depth descriptions of working on satellites.
Moradi joined Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC), University of Maryland in 2011. His research is focused on microwave remote sensing including, calibration and validation of satellite microwave observations, retrieving geophysical variables from satellite microwave measurements, microwave radiative transfer modelling, assimilation of all-sky microwave observations into NWP models, and Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSE). He is affiliated with NASA Global Modelling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) and NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR).
