ESSIC / AOSC professor Raghu Murtugudde recently penned an article posted on The Hindu Business Line titled, “Subsidies on irrigation efficiency may have negative impact on water use”.
The article discusses the results of a recent study published in the journal Science, which suggests that although crop production yields are up, irrigation efficiency subsidies have not resulted in surplus water resources for urban, domestic and industrial uses.
Murtugudde notes that combining subsidies along with caps, electricity use, crop selection, weather forecasts and analysis of other market factors are necessary to maximize efficiency benefit.
Raghu Murtugudde is an ESSIC / AOSC scientist and professor as well as an affiliate professor for the Geology department at University of Maryland, College Park and a visiting professor at IIT Bombay. He works primarily in climate studies, exploring the co-evolution of life and climate and what it means for sustainability. He also writes a blog hosted on the ESSIC website.
