ESSIC-AOSC professor Raghu Murtugudde was quoted in a Washington Post feature-article on October 29th, during the height of Hurricane Sandy. The story illustrates the growing trend from media and experts alike to both describe and personalize severe storms and extreme weather events, with cliches and neologisms. The author further suggests that use of the sometimes light-hearted and flippant terminology may in fact be a “control assertion” response to situations where as people, we have none.
