ESSIC scientist Ross Salawitch was recently interviewed in “Envirocast”, a weekly environmental podcast hosted by Dylan Westheimer, a 14-year-old based in California. In the podcast, Salawitch is interviewed on the Paris Climate Accord, the international agreement meant to limit global warming, in anticipation of President-Elect Joe Biden’s promise to rejoin this agreement.
Through the podcast, Westheimer quizzes Salawitch, an authority on the Paris Climate Accord, on the agreement’s goals and science. Salawitch discusses the many ways that the U.S. could reach the agreement’s goals, including placing a price on the emission of atmospheric CO2 from power plants, expanding into nuclear energy, innovating economic incentives on clean energy, better landfill management, and decreasing red meat consumption.
“We need a multifaceted effort to go after this,” said Ross Salawitch.
Salawitch is a professor in the Department of Atmospheric & Oceanic Science and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He came to UMD and ESSIC in 2007, after having worked at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. His research focuses on quantification of the effects of human activity on atmospheric composition. Major topics of current interest are stratospheric ozone depletion and recovery, air quality, and the global carbon cycle.
