ESSIC visiting research scientist Tom Smith will be recognized with a Commerce Department Group Gold Medal for Scientific/Engineering Achievement, as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Global Surface Temperature Dataset Team. The team was nominated by NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) for ground-breaking research that utilized the dataset to disprove the so-called “15 year hiatus” in global warming. Smith is a physical scientist in NOAA's Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) Satellite Climate Studies Branch, which is co-located within the ESSIC-administered Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites-Maryland (CICS-MD).
