AGU unprecedentedly honors Li with Kaufman Award and Fellowship

AOSC undergrad awarded Hollings Scholarship

Sophomore atmospheric and oceanic science major Michael Natoli was one of two University of Maryland undergraduate students to receive NOAA’s Earnest F. Local water alkalinity could impact river life

Alkalinity in local rivers is on the rise, and human activity could be to blame. A recent study conducted by a university-led team of researchers links human activity to shifts in the chemical makeup of rivers. The study, published in the Environmental Science & Technology journal in July, shows increasing alkalinity in rivers — a trend happening in this state and across the eastern part of the United States, said geology professor Sujay Kaushal, the leading author of the study. University researchers weigh in on state ‘rain tax’

New fees went into effect July 1 in order to support Chesapeake Bay restoration projects and discourage practices that lead to heavy storm water runoff, but some university researchers are skeptical of whether this “rain tax” will adequately accomplish these goals. New research shows that while cruising is becoming a popular option for vacationers across the globe, cruise liners may have detrimental effects on the environment.

Switchgear Maintenance Re-scheduled: Power outage @ESSIC, eve of 11/30

The ESSIC M-Square Bldg will undergo a scheduled power outage from Friday, Nov. 30 at 8 pm until 9 am Saturday, Dec 1. The outage is as a result of a required PEPCO “Switchgear” Maintenance procedure.  (Note: An earlier scheduled procedure for mid-October was canceled by PEPCO on the day of the event.) ESSIC hosts CICS-MD Science Meeting
