ESSIC Scientists Patricia Parker and Weston Anderson recently participated in the NASA Live Shots media campaign, which resulted in a series of media interviews about the NASA/NOAA global temperature update.
Congratulations to ESSIC Associate Research Scientist Jordan Borak, newly elected Professional-Track Faculty (PTK) representative for the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) on the UMD Senate!
The ESSIC/CISESS Lightning Team members Guangyang Fang and Daile Zhang recently attended the 2022 Mid-Atlantic ChaserCon, a conference for meteorologists at National Weather Service, broadcast meteorologists, emergency managers, storm chasers and other professional and amateur meteorologists across the great Mid-Atlantic area to network and discuss local severe storms and promote ideas to raise public awareness of severe weather and emergency management. Accompanying them were Undergraduate Research Assistants Alex Friedman, Domenic Brooks, and Samantha Smith as well as an AOSC grad student Alvin Cheung.
Last week, NOAA Administrators announced the recipients of the 2022 Bronze Medal, Distinguished Career, Administrator’s Awards, and Recognition Awards for 50 Years of Service. Among the awardees were several ESSIC scientists.
ESSIC /CISESS Research Scientist Isaac Moradi was recently elected as a member of the University of Maryland Research Council. The Research Council is task force deployed by the University Senate that provides guidance to the UMD Vice President for research on matters such as:
ESSIC Associate Director Ralph Ferraro is a member of the new Professional Track (PTK) Working Group, a committee composed of PTK and Tenure Track (TTK) faculty, staff and administrators on behalf of Provost Jennifer King Rice to review and assess current issues related to PTK faculty. The goal of the Working Group is to develop a report of recommendations to Provost Rice on PTK issues.
Ron Vogel, ESSIC/CISESS Senior Faculty Specialist, and Melanie Abecassis, ESSIC/CISESS Assistant Research Scientist, designed and taught a specially tailored NOAA CoastWatch satellite training class for the fisheries research community. The fishery researchers use tagged fish to understand population dynamics and ecosystem change; however, use of satellite data in this research is still somewhat limited. In order to fill this gap, the class featured satellite parameters that are underutilized in this research but have been identified by the fisheries community as an area for research growth, such as satellite-derived seascapes, geostrophic currents, sea surface height anomaly and salinity.
This past summer, ESSIC’s Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) welcomed 22 interns to assist in the research of 24 ESSIC/CISESS scientists. Of the interns, three were graduate students, 14 were undergraduates and five were high school students. Several of these students were returning interns from previous semesters.
CISESS sponsored two early career scientists, Drs. Malar Arulraj and Daile Zhang, to attend the 2022 Cooperative Research Program (CoRP) Science Symposium, which was held in person on July 25th to 27th at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) of Colorado State University located in Fort Collins, CO.
