ESSIC/CISESS Senior Faculty Specialist Ron Vogel, Operations Manager for the East Coast Node, was recently recognized and highly praised for his contributions to the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office to identify satellite derived products that support habitat and fisheries management applications.
ESSIC/CISESS Associate Research Scientist Isaac Moradi is the PI of a proposal selected by NASA ROSES to assimilate measurements from active spaceborne radars into NASA GEOS model. The project will benefit from CloudSat CPR and GPM DPR observations and will be conducted in collaboration with Co-Is from NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office and the Mesoscale Atmospheric Processes Laboratory.
ESSIC/CISESS Post-doctoral Associate Daile Zhang was recently featured by The National Lightning Safety Council to discuss her role in the lightning safety effort. In the feature, Zhang talks about what drew her to lightning, specific projects sheâs working on, and the future of lightning research.
A paper co-authored by ESSIC/CISESS Assistant Research Scientists Sarah Ringerud and Yalei You was selected as the winner of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society 2020 Transactions Prize Paper Award. The paper, titled âAn ActiveâPassive Microwave Land Surface Database From GPMâ, is also by coauthors S. Joseph Munchak and Ludovic Brucker from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and international researchers Iris de Gelis and Catherine Prigent.
Sujay Kaushal, ESSIC and Department of Geology Associate Professor, submitted a report to the Chesapeake Bay Trust titled, âTree Trade-Offs in Stream Restoration Projects: Impact on Riparian Groundwater Qualityâ. Kaushalâs co-authors include Kelsey Wood, Department of Geology Faculty Assistant, Joseph G. Galella Department of Geology Graduate Student, and Philippe G. Vidon from The State University of New York.
ESSIC/AOSC Professor Raghu Murtugudde is a co-author on a recent paper titled âShort and Medium Range Irrigation Scheduling using Stochastic SimulationâOptimization Framework with farmâscale Ecohydrological Model and Weather Forecastsâ alongside colleagues from the Institute of Technology Bombayâs Department of Civil Engineering.
Alexey Mishonov, ESSIC/CISESS Associate Research Scientist, participated in the 2021 International Conference on Marine Data and Information Systems, held virtually this year between April 12-14. Mishonov presented a keynote talk titled, âWorld Ocean Database in 3D: Development, Dissemination, Deliverablesâ, which discussed the work completed alongside the World Ocean Database team, composed of ten other NCEI/NOAA scientists.
ESSIC/CISESS scientists Erick Geiger, Gang Liu, and Jacqueline De La Cour at NOAA Coral Reef Watch have a new article on satellite ocean color data published in the 13 April 2021 issue of Frontiers in Marine Science. The goal of their study was to determine how best to fill satellite data gaps from cloud cover and quality control exclusions in shallow water. They tested a combination of six spatial (horizontal scale below) and seven temporal scales (vertical scale below) for aggregating data from the VIIRS instrument at several coral reef locations in Maui, Hawaiâi and Puerto Rico and compared these with in situ measurements of water turbidity.
